CELPIP Listening Part 1 (Problem Solving) — 8-question strategy

CELPIP Listening Part 1 is called Listening to Problem Solving. It is the first scored part of the Listening test. Two speakers, usually a customer and a staff member, discuss a problem and work toward a solution. The conversation is delivered in three short audio segments, and you answer 8 multiple-choice questions in total. Because the pattern is so consistent, it is widely considered the most predictable part of the CELPIP Listening test.

Part 1 has 8 multiple-choice questions. They are spread across the three audio segments, so you answer a few questions after each segment rather than all eight at the end. The audio adds up to roughly six minutes, plus the time you get to answer. Every question is scored right or wrong with no penalty for guessing, so you should always select an answer even if you are unsure.

It is one conversation, played in three chunks. The first segment states the problem, the second gives more information, and the third reaches a solution. After each segment you answer the questions for that portion, then the next segment plays. This structure means you do not have to hold the whole conversation in your head; deal with each chunk as it comes and focus on the detail that segment covers.

Keep notes minimal. A common mistake in Part 1 is trying to write everything down while the speakers are talking, which pulls your attention away from the audio you only hear once. Listen first and write second: follow the problem, the suggestions, and the final decision, and jot only a key name, number, or choice in shorthand. Because you answer after each segment, you rarely need long notes to remember what was said.

Four traps cost most of the points. First, choosing an option that simply rephrases the problem instead of the one that actually solves it. Second, falling for distractors that repeat a number from the audio but use it out of context. Third, missing the speaker's tone, such as annoyed versus satisfied, when the answer hinges on how they feel. Fourth, note-taking so heavily that you stop listening to the conversation.
