How the CELPIP Listening test works
The CELPIP-General Listening test has six parts and 38 scored questions, and takes about 47–55 minutes. Every clip plays once — there is no replay button — so the skill being tested is catching detail the first time. CelpipRise has 240 Listening sets, 40 for each part, built to the official structure: the same audio-once rule, the same timer, and answers with explanations the moment you finish. Two sets in every part are free with no account.
| Part | What you hear | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| Part 1 — Listening to Problem Solving | Three short segments of one conversation in which two people work through a problem. | 8Drill |
| Part 2 — Listening to a Daily Life Conversation | One everyday exchange — a phone call, an appointment, a favour between friends. | 5Drill |
| Part 3 — Listening for Information | An information-heavy conversation, often an interview or an orientation. | 6Drill |
| Part 4 — Listening to a News Item | A short news report on a local or national story. | 5Drill |
| Part 5 — Listening to a Discussion | A video of three people discussing a workplace or community issue. | 8Drill |
| Part 6 — Listening to Viewpoints | One speaker presenting a viewpoint on a community question. | 6Drill |
38 scored questions in 47–55 minutes. Some sittings include an unscored experimental part that looks like the others; it does not count toward your level.
How practice works on CelpipRise
- Audio plays once, exactly as on the test. No pause, no replay.
- The timer runs per part at the official length, and questions use the same multiple-choice and drop-down formats as the real screen.
- Take notes as you listen — you will have paper for notes at the test centre, and the habit is worth building early.
- Finish a set and every question shows the correct answer with a one-line explanation of where in the audio it came from.
- Your level estimate comes from accuracy across the parts, and every attempt is saved so you can see the trend part by part.

CELPIP Listening tips that move the level
- Read the question stems before the audio starts whenever the screen shows them — you then listen for answers instead of general meaning.
- Write down every number, name and reason you hear. Part 1 and Part 3 questions almost always turn on one of those three.
- Expect distractors: a speaker often states one option, then corrects to another. The correction is usually the answer.
- In Parts 4–6 the questions follow the order of the recording. If you lose your place, move to the next question and keep listening.
Strategy guides
CELPIP Listening FAQ
How long is the CELPIP Listening test?
About 47–55 minutes, including instructions, across six parts and 38 scored questions.
Can I replay the audio on the CELPIP Listening test?
No. Each recording plays once, which is why practising with audio-once sets matters more than practising with pausable audio.
How is CELPIP Listening scored?
Your raw score is converted to a CELPIP level from 1 to 12, and each level maps directly to the same Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB). Paragon does not publish fixed raw-score cut-offs; CelpipRise shows an estimated level from your accuracy.
Are the CelpipRise Listening sets free?
Two sets in every part — 12 in total — are free with no account. All 240 sets, attempt history and level tracking come with a plan.
Which Listening part is hardest?
Most learners lose the most marks in Part 5 (the three-person video discussion) and Part 6 (viewpoints), where questions test opinion and reasoning rather than fact. The part guides cover the strategy for each.
