How the CELPIP Speaking test works

CELPIP Speaking is eight recorded tasks in about 15–20 minutes. There is no examiner in the room: you read the prompt, get 30 or 60 seconds to prepare, then speak into a headset for 60 or 90 seconds while a timer counts down. Responses are rated on Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability and Task Fulfillment. CelpipRise runs the same prep-then-record sequence for every task, transcribes your answer, and returns a level estimate with per-criterion notes and a band 10–12 model answer for the same prompt. Two tasks of every type are free to practise, and each free task includes one AI score — the band, all four criteria, what to fix and a model answer. A free account is needed to record.

How practice works on CelpipRise

  • Prep timer, then the record timer, at the official length for each task — no pausing.
  • Your recording is transcribed and rated on the four criteria, with notes that quote your own sentences.
  • A band 10–12 model answer for the same prompt shows what a full-length, well-organised response sounds like.
  • Tasks 3 and 4 share a scene, as on the real test, so you practise describe-then-predict on one picture.

CELPIP Speaking tips that move the level

  • Fill the time. A 35-second answer to a 60-second task loses Content marks before a single word is judged.
  • Use the prep time to write three keywords, not sentences. Reading from notes flattens delivery, and Listenability is about clear, natural speech.
  • For Tasks 5 and 6, state your choice in the first sentence, then give reasons. Deciding out loud wastes half the time.
  • Accent is not scored; clarity and pace are. Slow down slightly and finish your sentences.

CELPIP Speaking FAQ

How long is the CELPIP Speaking test?

About 15–20 minutes for eight tasks, each with 30–60 seconds of preparation and 60–90 seconds of speaking.

Do I speak to a real examiner?

No. You speak into a headset microphone at a computer and the recordings are rated afterwards.

What is Listenability in CELPIP Speaking?

How easy your speech is to follow — pronunciation, pace, rhythm and fluency. It is not a judgement of accent.

Can I practise CELPIP Speaking for free?

Yes. Two prompts of each task type are free to record with a free account, with AI feedback and a model answer. All 210 tasks come with a plan.
