How the CELPIP Writing test works
CELPIP Writing has two tasks and a 53–60 minute limit: an email (Task 1, about 27 minutes) and a response to survey questions (Task 2, about 26 minutes), each 150–200 words. Both are rated on four criteria — Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability and Task Fulfillment. CelpipRise has 80 tasks, 40 of each type; every submission gets a level estimate, per-criterion feedback on your own sentences and a band 9–12 model answer for the same prompt. Two tasks of each type are free, and each free task includes one AI score — the band, all four criteria, what to fix and a model answer. A free account is needed to submit.
| Task | What you write | Length · time |
|---|---|---|
| Task 1 — Writing an Email | A situation and three or four points you must cover, to a named reader — a landlord, a manager, a neighbour. | 150–200 words · 27 minDrill |
| Task 2 — Responding to Survey Questions | A community or workplace survey with two options; you choose one and explain why. | 150–200 words · 26 minDrill |
Two tasks in 53–60 minutes. There is no spell-check or grammar-check on the test screen; a word counter is shown.
How practice works on CelpipRise
- The prompt, timer and word counter match the test screen — and no spell-check, because the real test has none.
- Submit and the AI marker returns a level estimate, a score on each of the four criteria and specific notes on your sentences.
- Every prompt has a band 9–12 model answer you can compare against after submitting.
- Task 1 prompts cover the real situation types — complaint, request, invitation, apology, information — and are tagged so you can drill one.

CELPIP Writing tips that move the level
- Cover every bullet in the prompt in its own short paragraph. Task Fulfillment is the criterion band-7 writers lose most, and the easiest to fix.
- Match the register to the reader: formal to a manager or company, warm to a friend. Mixing the two costs a Vocabulary mark.
- Stay inside 150–200 words. Slightly over is not penalised automatically; well under almost always costs Content.
- Leave two minutes to reread for articles, plurals and subject–verb agreement — the three error types that decide Readability.

CELPIP Writing FAQ
How many words for CELPIP Writing?
150–200 words for each task. The counter on the test screen shows your total as you type.
How is CELPIP Writing scored?
Each task is rated on Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability and Task Fulfillment; the combined result becomes a level from 1 to 12, which equals the same CLB level.
Can I use a template for CELPIP Writing?
A structure — greeting, purpose, one paragraph per point, closing — is useful. Memorised sentences that do not fit the prompt read as off-task and cost Task Fulfillment marks.
Is the Writing practice free?
The prompts and timer are free to use. Submitting for AI feedback needs a free account; two tasks of each type are free to submit, and all 80 come with a plan.
