For most people applying for Canadian permanent residence, CELPIP is the easier test to score well on — not because the English is simpler, but because of the format. Speaking is recorded at a computer instead of in an interview, the topics are everyday Canadian situations, the whole test is done in one three-hour sitting, and the scoring maps one-to-one to CLB levels so there is no rounding against you. IELTS General Training is easier for a minority: candidates who freeze at a microphone but relax with a person, and candidates who prefer handwriting to typing. Candidates who switch usually do it after an IELTS Speaking band that is stuck at 6.5 while the other skills sit at 7 or above. Is CELPIP easier than IELTS?
Neither test is officially easier. IRCC accepts both for Express Entry, and both are converted to the same CLB scale, so the passing bar is the same. What differs is the format: CELPIP is fully computer-based with recorded speaking and Canadian English throughout, while IELTS uses a face-to-face speaking interview and mixed UK, Australian and American English. Does IRCC accept CELPIP for Express Entry?
Yes. IRCC accepts CELPIP-General for Express Entry alongside IELTS. Both tests are converted to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, and that CLB level is what your Express Entry profile uses. CELPIP is the simpler of the two to read because its levels map one-to-one to CLB: a CELPIP 9 in a skill is CLB 9 in that skill, with no conversion table needed.
What is CELPIP 9 equivalent to in IELTS?
CELPIP scores each skill on a 1 to 12 scale, and CELPIP 9 equals CLB 9. IELTS uses 0 to 9 bands in half-point steps, and IRCC converts each IELTS skill band to a CLB level with its own per-skill table, so a single IELTS band does not line up neatly with one CELPIP level in every skill. Is CELPIP Speaking easier than IELTS Speaking?
It depends on you. CELPIP Speaking is eight recorded tasks on a computer with a headset: each task gives you 30 to 60 seconds to prepare and 60 to 90 seconds to speak, and there is no examiner in the room. IELTS Speaking is a face-to-face interview. If talking to a stranger makes you nervous, CELPIP's recorded format often feels easier; if timers and microphones throw you off, the IELTS interview may suit you better.
How is CELPIP Writing different from IELTS Writing?
CELPIP Writing has two typed tasks of roughly 26 to 27 minutes each: an email and a survey response, both around 150 to 200 words and both practical, everyday situations. IELTS Writing leans more academic and includes an essay, and on the paper version you write by hand. If your English is mostly workplace and daily-life English, CELPIP's tasks tend to feel more natural; if you have written university essays in English, IELTS plays to that.
How long does it take to get CELPIP results?
According to celpip.ca, CELPIP scores are posted online in your CELPIP account 2 to 4 business days after your test date, and you get an email when they are ready. Hard-copy score reports have been discontinued. If you need to retake, celpip.ca states you may register for no more than one test session within five calendar days, so a quick second attempt is possible.
Is CELPIP only in Canadian English?
Yes. CELPIP uses Canadian English and Canadian accents throughout its Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking sections, and its scenarios are set in everyday Canadian life. IELTS mixes UK, Australian and American English. If you already live in Canada, the CELPIP context will feel familiar.
