What CELPIP score do I need? CRS language points calculator
Pick your CELPIP level in each of the four abilities and whether you are applying with a spouse or common-law partner. You get your Express Entry CRS points for the first official language, ability by ability, and a plain answer to “how much is one more level worth?” The numbers come straight from IRCC’s CRS criteria table; CELPIP levels equal CLB levels, so no conversion is needed.

What one more level is worth
- Getting Listening from 8 to 9 adds 8 points.(biggest single gain)
- Getting Reading from 8 to 9 adds 8 points.
- Getting Writing from 8 to 9 adds 8 points.
- Getting Speaking from 8 to 9 adds 8 points.
All four abilities are at CLB 7 or more, which qualifies for the lower language tier of the skill-transferability combinations. Getting every ability to CLB 9 moves you to the higher tier (25 or 50 points per combination instead of 13 or 25).

For a CELPIP taker this means French (TEF Canada or TCF Canada). Maximum 6 points per ability, up to a combined maximum of 22 with a spouse or partner, 24 without.

How CELPIP levels turn into CRS points
- Points are awarded per ability, so a weak skill costs you directly. Listening 10, Reading 10, Writing 10 and Speaking 7 without a spouse is 34 + 34 + 34 + 17 = 119, not 136.
- The table stops at “CLB 10 or more”. CELPIP 10, 11 and 12 all earn the same CRS points, so once an ability is at 10 there is nothing more to gain there.
- CLB 4 and 5 share one row (6 points), and the jumps are uneven: 6 → 7 is worth 8 points and 8 → 9 is worth 8 (7 with a spouse), while 9 → 10 is worth only 3.
- Having an accompanying spouse lowers your own language maximum from 136 to 128, but your spouse’s results can add up to 20 points back under the spouse factors.
- Language also feeds the skill-transferability combinations. With CLB 7 or more in all four abilities, education + language and foreign work experience + language each pay 13 or 25 points; with CLB 9 or more in all four, they pay 25 or 50. Each combination is capped at 50.
- French test results count separately as the second official language (up to 6 per ability, 22 or 24 combined) and can also earn additional points, which are outside the scope of this calculator.

Frequently asked questions
What CELPIP score gives the maximum CRS language points?
CELPIP 10 in all four abilities. IRCC's first-official-language table tops out at "CLB 10 or more", worth 34 points per ability without a spouse (136 in total) or 32 per ability with a spouse (128 in total). CELPIP 11 and 12 sit in the same row, so they earn the same CRS points as CELPIP 10.
How many CRS points is CELPIP 9 worth compared with CELPIP 8?
Without a spouse, CLB 9 earns 31 points per ability and CLB 8 earns 23, so each ability you move from 8 to 9 adds 8 points, and moving all four adds 32. With a spouse the figures are 29 and 22, so 7 per ability and 28 for all four. Reaching CLB 9 in all four also unlocks the higher tier of skill-transferability points.
Is CELPIP 9 the same as CLB 9?
Yes. CELPIP-General levels map one-to-one to Canadian Language Benchmark levels, so you can read your CELPIP level straight into the CLB column of IRCC's CRS tables. No conversion is needed.
Do CELPIP 4 and CELPIP 5 earn different CRS points?
No. IRCC's table groups "CLB 4 or 5" into one row worth 6 points per ability, and anything below CLB 4 earns 0. The first step that adds points after CLB 4 is CLB 6 (8 points with a spouse, 9 without).
Does my spouse's CELPIP score count towards CRS?
Only if your spouse or common-law partner is coming to Canada with you and is not already a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Their first-official-language results earn up to 5 points per ability (CLB 9 or more) and up to 20 points in total, under the spouse factors. If they are not accompanying you, or are a citizen or permanent resident, you are scored as if you had no spouse, which also gives you the higher "without a spouse" core points.
Is the number this calculator shows my full CRS score?
No. It shows only the first-official-language part of the core/human capital factors. Your full CRS score also includes age, education, Canadian work experience, second-language points, spouse factors, skill-transferability combinations and additional points such as a provincial nomination.
